Annie, is there something in particular that looks jargon-y? I'm trying to figure out the best way to rewrite. Something like: Top section: Social Security can only see work where you paid into the Social Security through your employer's payroll taxes. Your Social Security retirement benefits will be affected by the Windfall Elimination provision if you have a pension or retirement fund from work where you did not pay into Social Security.
Did you work in “non-covered” employment? “Non-covered” employment is employment where your employer did not withhold Social Security taxes from your wages. Earnings from "non-covered" employment will not show up on your Social Security earnings statement. See the next screen for help finding your SSA earnings statement.
If yes: Do you have a pension or retirement account? This can be either a monthly pension or a lump sum like a $401K. It can be an employee-contribution-only plan or an employer/employee-matching contribution plan. The important thing is whether this pension or account came from work for an employer that does not pay into Social Security.
