The bridge between musician volunteers and healthcare centers.

State the Problem

  1. Patients and residents at healthcare facilities would love more musicians to visit.
  2. These facilities usually have limited budget to pay musicians, so they heavily rely on volunteer musicians.
  3. Many musicians are willing to volunteer (especially music students at colleges because they gain experience), but the work it takes to connect with a facility is too much (The activity person at the facilities usually doesn't work full-time, so musicians end up making phone calls, leaving voice messages and calling again etc.)
  4. If we create an awesome experience for musicians to schedule volunteer performances, they will volunteer more and everyone will be happy!

    Why

[What is the specific issue that this is solving and why is it worth solving? What is the evidence that it is an issue in our community?] This is a web app that allows activity directors at healthcare facilities to list the location and time they are recruiting for volunteer performances and musicians can search by location and time to find and sign up for these sessions.
Through my research by calling 20 ish healthcare facilities across 5 states, I found that really close to 100% of the healthcare facilities invite musicians to perform either as paid or volunteer sessions. Also, really close to 100% of them want more musicians to go in because they recognize the positive impact music has on the residents and patients. On the other hand, I have talked to a number of musicians, and many of them have volunteered at places they are connected by knowing someone working or living there. Music students in colleges are also looking for places to perform because they want to gain more performance experience so that they can be better by the time they graduate.

Potential Partner(s)?

[Is there a known organization that would be willing to partner on this?] Universities, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, retirement homes

Additional Background Context

[Is there additional context for the project Possible deadline?] It would be great to launch by September because that's when school starts and the cello professor at University of Denver told me to go back to recruit in the Fall for more student participation.

Stage Checklists

Complete checklists for each stage in process before moving forward

Idea Phase (pre-pitch)

  • [x] Have an idea/problem
  • [x] Complete initial validation checklist:
  • [x] Focused on helping the community
  • [x] We work "with" not "for"
  • [x] Projects that are reusable
  • [x] Not illegal
  • [x] Not promoting a particular political party or religious group
  • [x] Not antagonistic to government
  • [x] Not "free work"
  • [x] Fill out top of this card with problem statement, why, etc.
  • [x] Coordinate with CfD member to get pitch on agenda for pitch night (first Monday of the month)

    Pitching Phase

  • [x] Move card to Pitches/Presentation list in waffle if you are presenting tonight
  • [x] Present to group (3 min limit)
  • [x] Group Q&A (3 min - if there is additional questions that can happen in the follow up pomodoro)
  • [x] Initial vote on whether ready for Exploration Phase.
  • Cards that are voted ready should get "Pitched - Accepted" label
  • One pomodoro for further discussion around any cards that were not determined quite ready for Exploration. Presenter should be ready to discuss, answer any questions, and revise pitch.
  • Quick update after pomodoro from presenters
  • Group determines next step in final vote:
  • a) Idea needs more development (card is moved back to Ideas list with label “Needs development”
  • b) Idea is accepted but group doesn’t have resources to take on right now (card stays in pitch column with label “Pitched - Accepted”)
  • c) Idea is accepted and group has the capacity to take on (ie, the team is under the WIP limit for taking on projects)
  • If outcome c) is determined:
  • [x] a) Identify project champion
  • [x] b) Create project waffle board from Project Bootstrapper
  • If the above steps cannot be completed, then the project outcome should actually be B above, and project card stays in Pitches list with label “Pitched - Accepted”

    Exploration Phase

This phase involves no actual building (e.g. programming), and requires you have a project champion

Active development is where a team invests in developing an minimum viable product (MVP), and then based on the feedback iterates and continues development.
