Research smart bins for efficient waste management

To implement an IoT based solution for efficient waste management. The solution would be install smart bins capable of transmitting their fill levels and any maintenance needs to the back bone. The infrastructure requirements would include a number of smart garbage bins, routers, and servers. Each garbage bin could be battery operated for mobility and could have different fill level requirements for collection. The router/gateway can connect to the cloud backbone.

At the servers, the bin distribution could be viewed in a map form; the fill levels can be viewed and the collection routes can be optimized. Can implement an efficient application that can monitor the utilization levels, enforce guidelines to improve utilization by the community; it can also do some analytics, optimum route scheduling, enforcement, maintenance of the bins.

Decisions based on real time data could lead to efficiency and user satisfaction and success of the program. The bins can host energy-efficient / green techniques like solar panels, to reduce environmental impact. Data collected from other cities who have already implemented similar solutions can be used to assess the benefits.

I interviewed a company at CES 2016 that has developed smart trash bins. They have an advertising model, although they will sell them in locales where advertising doesn't pay.
