Public Access to Road Closure Information #6

Open hassan opened 9 years ago

hassan commented 9 years ago

There are multiple reasons for a road to be temporarily unusable: paving, utility maintenance, construction, art fair, athletic event, etc.

If all such events require city permission [confirmation needed], there should be a single source of information about them, minimally including what, where, when, and contact information for the responsible party.

Assuming that data source, an app could be created to enable citizens to look up road closure information or subscribe to receive alerts for areas of interest (home street, neighborhood, route to work).

A staff member in the Dept of Transportation pointed me to the following map of traffic disruptions due to construction activities. Apparently the "Cone Zone" layer is maintained Public Works department and is currently published using Google Maps Engine, but the data does not appear to be available for download at this time.

Per an email (on 27 April 2015) to Michelle Thong from Mike Brown, Geographic Systems Specialist for the City of San Jose, the data that supports the "Cone Zone" app is being migrated to a new environment and cleaned up.

Final note from Mike: "tl;dr The data will be open but not for a while." :-)

With Michelle on maternity leave, I'm not sure if updates on that will be communicated to anyone else in CjSJ. And in any case, even that data doesn't cover special event closures, so this project is pretty much on hold for now.

I'm going to try to find out about special event closure data...
