Overview

Let's make it look like a modern racing game.

Milestone 1

Basic menu
Tessellated terrain
A world that is big enough to test landscape culling

Milestone 2 and beyond

Collision detection between car and terrain
Grass instancing
Complex heightmap
Tracks to drive (spline roads)
A really large world that needs double precision
Time of Day
Far shadows for trees
Landscape shading weirdly flickers when moving in bird view.

Backlog

AI bots, steering behaviour
Nice car models
Clearcoat material

Flat ground without tessellation
No foliages
Same trees all over
A random point light
Broken clouds

Shadow hardcut because I don't have a solution for distant shadows
Well at least I have a photo mode! :)

2024-07-21

Implement basic title menu.
Refine volumetric clouds a little.

Compute shader based tessellation (sort of).
Sample heightmap from CPU and GPU.

Implement landscape frustum culling (both CPU and GPU).

land_frustum_cull A contrived camera frustum was used for landscape to see if culling actually works.

Problems

SSAO looks weird on player camera.
Landscape shading weirdly flickers when moving in bird view.

Fix something then another rendering artifact appears 🤷🏻
