challenges:

making it relevant for researchers, who "just need to submit this paper"
supporting wide range of expertise (increasing challenge)
emphasize the reasoning behind writing interoperable code
emphasize motivation for using version control, testing, documentation, and modularization
- a polished showcase of what a "completed" exercise looks like could help

idea: implement guacamole (or swedish analog) recipe in your language (as a group?)

what would you encapsulate?
is naming your functions obvious?
how could you parallelize?
how easy is it to write tests for it?
are variables written to in local functions?
what is the difference between bare functions and nested functions?
- are they grouped by purpose, or process?
- does the name describe a module?
- is it fit to be a stand-alone library?
