Indeed, it's usually written λάμδα and seldom λάμβδα. I don't know whether it should be moved to the rare dictionary or just discarded.

So, what do you recommend? Moving to rare, but I wonder whether it should be discarded.

To the best of my knowledge, λάμδα has always been more common than λάμβδα in Greek. But the two consonants μδ are hard to pronounce and can naturally evolve into something like μβδ when pronounced. Anyway, the alternative “lambda” has been kept in English. However, “lamda” has prevailed in the Unicode Greek and Coptic scripts, as well as mathematical alphanumeric symbols.

I prefer rare, thanks anyway.
