Elsewhere, you can type something like [tag:java] in a post and two things happen: (1) that becomes a link to the page for the tag, and (2) any special highlighting for that tag is applied, like moderator-only tags or required/topic tags. You get something that looks like the tags under a top-level post, but inline. We've talked about this in the past but I couldn't find an issue for it.
A few people construct that styling manually, and some use links, and most just use "naked" tag names because anything else is too much trouble. Tag linking is helpful in meta discussions about tags, and tag highlighting is helpful for pseudo-tagging answers. Actually tagging answers would be a bigger project requiring more thought, but tag linking/styling could meet some of the needs that also drag answer tagging.
