Clarification for License of mp4v2 #30

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 8 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
The homepage for mp4v2 and all the source files state the mp4v2 is licensed
under the MPL-1.1 yet the COPYING file has the text to the LGPL-2.0.

From what I understand, mp4v2 originally comes from mpeg4ip, which was
licensed under MPL-1.1 only. Also, I noticed the COPYING file changed from
having the GPL-2.0 text to now having the LGPL-2.0 text. Is there
provisions now indicating that mp4v2 is licensed under other licenses
besides the MPL?

It should all be MPL 1.1. I believe that KB added the license file with the new
build system. It needs to
be changed.

Ok thanks. Will it be possible to release mp4v2 as GPL and LGPL similar to how
some
Mozilla projects are released as MPL/GPL/LGPL? This could make it possible to
use
mp4v2 in GPLed projects.

I'm not really in a position to change the license. It has to stay with what
Cisco set it as originally AFAIK.

Is there a way somebody can politely ask them if mp4v2 could be released under
different terms?

Hi - original developer. Cisco is not interested in changing - I no longer
work there, and there is nobody there
to follow up on it.

I would recommend you releasing your code having to download this library
first, instead of integrating it into
your project. Or making it separate enough that it appears as a system type
library.

Patch to fix COPYING to reflect reality.

It has been changed to be MPL.

Note that Cisco is changing to using MIT or BSD licenses, however as
baleighsdad@comcast.net points out it is
tricky to find someone to authorize the change.

I have also since left Cisco, which makes it a bit harder for me as well.
