People see stimuli sequentially (e.g., words, letters, images). After each stimulus presentation, participants see a distractor task (e.g., a math equation). They are supposed to indicate whether the presented math formular is correct or not. Afterwards, the next stimulus is presented. And so on. At the end a round, people have to recall the stimuli in order or do some other kind of memory test (e.g., recognition test).
