For the layer naming, is it possible to use ligatures instead of single Unicode characters?

No, at this time. Because gulp-iconfont doesn't support ligatures. https://github.com/cognitom/symbols-for-sketch#name-convention

What’s the status of this feature? At some point svgicons2svgfont added support for ligatures, but I don’t see any support for them when generated using this project.

Not working on it yet, but sounds nice. Feel free to reopen this issue.
