Why GPLv2 instead of GPLv3?
I found this guide pretty helpful in understanding the different OSS licenses: https://choosealicense.com/licenses/
@jtu0 - I wanted to go with v2 instead of v3 because GPLv3 fully supports the loophole of "if you don't distribute the actual software, just the data, technically you don't have to distribute it"
That said, the APGLv3 seems to close that loophole intentionally whereas gplv2 leaves it as possibly open.
Sending an ALPLv3 version for your consideration.
If we go AGPL we should be careful about how we message our values regarding copyright, equity, etc -- many people are reluctant to contribute to AGPL projects because of the degree of power/control the license tends to vest in original copyright holders / maintainers. @jtu0, Aria Stewart is one such person and while I don't recall her argument precisely I remember it being well reasoned -- I'm sure she'd be happy to chat with you about it.
In order to ensure that:
We believe that we should adopt the GPLv2, as that is used by several large, open source ecosystems such as Wordpress and Drupal.
This shall not be merged without unanimous consent by all founding contributors.
