Thanks for your help. I'm hoping now that you've provided a more comfortable way for Ubuntu users to install this, it will become popular. Ubuntu is the most popular distro by far. Of course, it all depends on how many people actually need to create gifs of their screen.
By the way, I discovered issues when running under Gnome last night and released a minor fix as Silentcast v1.8. So, your PPA is out of date, but only affects Gnome users which there aren't many on Ubuntu.
How should I notify you when I submit a new release?
I think my next release will be v2.0 and will include the ability to make a webm or mp4 file instead of an animated gif.
Thanks, I've updated the PPA.
I think for now I will just monitor your development and update the PPA when I get a chance (which might not always be very fast). If it gets really far behind you could open a GH issue and ping me. Does that sound fine?

Sounds good
Adding instructions for installing on Ubuntu by PPA. This should be stable, I tested it on 3 VMs and two real machines. The package currently isn't set up to allow the use of avconv (which I may, or may not fix later) and 12.04 doesn't have a new enough version of ffmpeg to support some of x11grab's options, so ppa:jon-severinsson/ffmpeg is needed. ppa:webupd8team/y-ppa-manger provides yad. The last PPA provides silentcast (that should be obvious ;). I will actively maintain it for as long as I can.
Thanks again for making this awesome little program!
