This fixes issue #58. It basically restores commit bd47c966a6b34041ef7e9ba7ec91f0013970d851.

This builds on pull request #60 because both have changes that affect the test output:

60 logs an extra line when there are no cores
this new pull request has the effect of doing that logging a bit earlier because it now happens during __init__ instead of install.

So please merge that pull request first. (Maybe I need to rebase then.)

I merged #60 and rebased this one, let's see what travis has to say and it can be merged. Great work!
