Live land use task list

Priority asks:

  1. [x] Upload OS sites data (Dining)
  2. [x] Add dwellings as default for all buildings (in progress, eta ~8pm)
  3. [ ] Add world 'default' after 'Dwellings' on the drop down
  4. [x] Add a note or hover saying '93% of properties in UK are dwellings so we have created this as the default colour. Can you help us by colouring in all non-residential and mixed use buildings?'
  5. [x] Add 'Vacant and derelict' back onto key
  6. [x] Check key colours match (e.g transport)
  7. [x] Get copy tool operational
  8. [ ] Make everything in drop down alphabetical
  9. [ ] Change text in land use box to read' start typing to view options' as we need an instruction here to get them to put something inl
  10. [x] Remove dropdown entries for groups that aren't relevant to buildings e.g forest, minerals etc . But we need to keep agriculture as this includes 'vets'.
  11. [ ] Make checking NLUD look up tables easier or possibly add class drop down
  12. [x] On the blue notice can this read ' Land use order, shown below, is automatically derived from the land use groups' i.e. adding 'shown below' i know it sounds obvious but think no harm in making super clear as the word 'order' is not in common use.
  13. [x] Add word 'pure' to retail on key- so says Retail (pure)
  14. [x] Add Agriculture back
  15. [ ] Make line between buildings more visible as can't see divisions on land use
  16. [ ] Change blue colour on dwellings to have some translucency so we can read text underneath when doing first draft (Maciek let's discuss if you don't think good idea)l
  17. [x] Add U030 Minerals U031 Mineral workings and quarries - ( have just found a couple of quarries right on outskirts)
  18. [x] Add new text on key to Retail - Remove word 'pure' and replace with Retail followed by smaller letters (pure/ incl. services)' as petrol stations. mechanics, printing services etc are also classified as retail.
  19. [ ] Link in NLUD excel table
  20. [x] Change Agriculture colour to hex fa667d
  21. [ ] Add multiple orders for mixed use

Non priority tasks

  1. [ ] Add 'Dwelling outbuilding' option on dropdown (not priority see discussion below)
  2. [ ] Add 1786 road vectorised network data as optional layer (not priority - by September 2020)

@polly64 a couple things to clarify:

polly64 commented 4 years ago

h @mz8i ok I think the making accessing to NLUD is ok for moment- this a liked to a bigger issue of whether we add in a class category - but not a top priority

Making edit history was something Dom brought up- ideally we are looking to have 'a 'date last edited' visible on on this - and really all categories- if this is easy to do then great but if time consuming would park as we have the history button which can be used if needed

@polly64 can we just confirm which table do you need for the Land Use class list? Is it the index from pages 43-54 in https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/11493/144275.pdf ?

mz8i commented 4 years ago

@polly64 for the land use group dropdown, the current placeholder text says "Type new land use group here". When the user clicks on the box, it will automatically show a list of all options, which will then be narrowed down if the user types anything. Will changing it to "Start typing to view options" give the user more information?

polly64 commented 4 years ago

Yes that's the one page 43-54

Re text can u just add ' start typing .. rather than type as makes more active - just speaking to dinding but will look at after this call think there might have been another issue

polly64 commented 4 years ago

@mz8i yes text is actually fine . and yes it's 43-54

polly64 commented 4 years ago

@mz8i have struck through translucency on list as realised that when we improve lines between buildings it will mean that its addresses the problem. Also have added the 1786 network to list but this is just by Sep 2020 ie by the time next grant goes in as this is a real game changer in understanding what the platform can do- and in terms of value of historical data. Once you overlay this you instantly understand how the entire retail (and in fact entire non-domestic) system in London works.

mz8i commented 4 years ago

@polly64 according to https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/11493/144275.pdf (page 38) I think domestic outbuildings should be classified under Dwellings - the description says "Houses and flats for individuals and families living as a single household, including adjoining garages, gardens, non-thoroughfare service and distribution roads and pathways" - this does not mention "domestic outbuildings" specifically, but as it mentions garages (so garages should not be under Vehicle Storage but rather under Dwellings) then I think it's the same for all other types of structures that are related to, and situated next to, residential buildings

polly64 commented 4 years ago

@tomalrussell @mz8i @dominijk Maciek has transferred NLUD classes into excel sheet attached. I am going to also add common classes are I think missing in a way that shows these are not NLUD but directs people for the moment to an NLUD class This will allow us to gradually build a more relevant and less biased land use classification

We will also need to work out a way people can easily add suggestions but that can be left for the UKRI citizen science application

polly64 commented 3 years ago

@mz8i I think - adding to your thoughts on acccuracy- we need to make it so that when u verify a domestic building to colour changes from dark blue to light. Otherwise we can't differentiate between checked and unchecked. then need add this to key as well- how difficult would this be to do?- think quite important as agree we are open to criticism here- if we had this i could actually start doing this in evenings as it's quite quick by eye but can i copy and paste verify?

mz8i commented 3 years ago

@polly64 I would advise against incorporating such complex logic into the raster tile layer and in the current set up I would leave the tiled map to display a single colour scale, as generating new tile layers for each such combination would be quite resource intensive.

But maybe what we could try is display the usual land use colour scale on the map, but then use the Open TOID coordinates to display a pin layer over that, and only display pins on buildings that should be verified? Let's work on the import of those coordinates first, and then we can test such mechanisms.
