The awkward thing about this situation is that I can't easily test opaleye with a bumped bound until after postgresql-simple bumps its bound!

You can check it temporarily using
cabal new-build --allow-newer=aeson opaleye
That's very handy, thanks. That would be possible locally, but to integrate it into my CI system might be prohibitively difficult.
