Wikidata Q-numbers to automatically fill in the image information #5819

What is the user problem or growth opportunity you want to see solved?

automatically fill in the image information if the Wikidata Q number is known.

How do you know that this problem exists today? Why is this important?

This would promote and simplify the creation of precise image information

Who will benefit from it?

Why not upload via Nearby? That would fill of of the info right?

Dash is correct if there is no “P18” photo yet.

But if I want to upload several other images to a topic (the “P18” photo is already there and I don't want to replace it) it could be helpful: not only the image information would fit immediately, but also the correct commons category would be suggested. (Finding exactly the right commons category is always a challenge for me: both on the desktop (commons Upload Wizard) and even more so with the commons app).

How about being able to upload from the item view? An item can be found via Explore>Items, or found in Bookmarks>items (or Bookmarks>locations). It would be more user-friendly than having to know that you can type a QID.

Do you mean that as an idea or is that already possible? What I could imagine: using an image linked to the QID as a reference/template?

Uploading from an image could be an idea too. The wizard would reuse the caption (or title if there is no caption), description, depictions, categories, license. Reusing hidden categories and other wikitext subtleties might be tricky.

I had thought of a default/information transfer as with the P18 images (only the visible categories)

You are right, copying hidden categories might not be a good idea.

By the way: I contribute to OSM and store images uploaded to commons using the “wikimedia commons” parameter. I often find the QID in the nodes. (This has certainly contributed to the fact that I opened this issue here).
