Tell us about the community that you are nominating
XRFoundation is a team of industry experts from around the world stewarding the emergence of the free, open, interoperable and commons-based spatial computing web-native infrastructure that will enable the future of the digital domain, some call it the metaverse, others call it the spatial web - we just call it the immersive internet. What public goods does this community support or will they support in the future?
Our approach is less of a single public good, and instead enables the context for users to create any number of public goods. Think of this more like what the internet or the iPhone or wordpress helped enable, an ecology of novel networks, organizations, institutions and projects - rather than a single targeted good. Specifically, the core technologies we see being public goods are a free and open source web native spatial engine, web3 middleware & cross-chain/side-chain adapter, and decentralized identity infrastructure (DID, Coil, verifiable credentials (VC) & wallet integrations)
Who are the people, DAOs and other organizations already part of this community?
We work with a number of private clients, have a community of hundreds of users using our free and open source technology. We have personal connections to networks of DAOs and other organizations, (such as LiminalDAO, DreamDAO, PortalDAO, DiatomDAO, RegenDAO), various holochain projects (SEEDS, Neighbourhoods Network, Commons Engine), though as we are focused primarily on building our own technology, community, ecosystem and SaaS platform, we often don’t have the time to actively participate in these organizations.
Why do you think this community needs a Commons?
Because we are all engineers with a passion for creating revolutionary technologies, our time to engage with our community is limited. Not only have we created a strong attractor over a number of emerging spaces - social websites, the metaverse, e-commerce, web3 & novel economic structures, cutting edge AI & IoT tooling etc - but we have also created new narratives about what this technology can look like and do. The last piece is we need the help to build a strong, diverse and passionate community to steward.
What other resources do you have that will make your Commons deployment a success?
We have a large team, our demand for research & development is high because we are doing so much on a tight budget. Our expertise can carry us very far, but we are in direct competition to the big names (Meta, Apple, Microsoft, Epic Games etc…) pushing their own siloed, rivalrous non-commons solutions to the problems we’ve already solved. We do require ongoing support financially to make this dream a reality, and we are open to whatever form this takes - upfront or ongoing donations, aid in growing community engagement, grant discovery & writing, ideally all of the above. We would love to talk more about what this can look like and help collaborate on meeting each other’s needs.
