Getting started on Totonac constructional analysis #9

Hi Bill,

We finally have 10 hours of transcribed Totonac and are starting to do some UD treebanking and constructional analysis, starting with an SIL grammatical sketch from 1968. Any advice? I'd like to write an NSF proposal about a constructional analysis of Totonac.

Hi Lori,

There are a lot of newer sources for Totonacan, but I don't know which variety your texts are from. You can find a list of Totonac documentation/description at Glottolog: https://glottolog.org/resource/languoid/id/toto1252

(sorry, I don't know how to make Markdown give me a live link even though I followed the user guide's three different ways to do it)

And sorry again, but for some reason the Find function is not working on my iMac so I can't find the pdfs that I have of sources. I'll send you what I can find.

Thanks. I will look at Glottolog to find other corpora. Our corpus is brand new, collected and transcribed by Jonathan Amith and Osbel Lopez. We are aiming for 50 hours transcribed and glossed in the next two years. The recordings are from Osbel's village, Zongozotla, which is highlands. The topic of conversation is not very diverse, just ethnobotany. I guess that's what Jonathan's original funding was for when he started recording. We are in touch with some of the people who work on other kinds of Totonac.

Thanks for the transfer. I have McFarland and MacKay. I'll have a look at the others.

There are some dictionaries at the ILV website

Great! That will be useful.

There is a native speaker, Osbel, staying at my house with his wife and kids. They will be here for a year. The wife, Marta, speaks Nahuatl and some Totonac. They told me that the kids speak with their grandparents, but the kids just told me they only speak Spanish. Maybe they don't know that they speak other languages.
