This is quite a complicated change. Can you show me how you would like it to work? I think it will require an entirely new interface.
Potential solution: use canvas select UI by race.
Can I get confirmation from you about the proposed use of the canvas select interface? I will need specific information about the order the race/ethnicity questions should be asked, and the way this variable should be stored.
The race/ethnicity questions should be shown in the following order:
I was envisioning this as being stored as dichotomous perceived variables ("Perceived Hispanic - yes/no," etc.). Also, is there anyway to prompt participants about individuals who haven't been identified as any race/ethnicity? I'm not sure how complicated that is.
We can't do "other (please specify)" on the canvas select interface as things are. I will have to add this functionality in later.
Race/ethnicity screens need to be revised to reflect a combination of the two prior approaches. Below is the text that should appear on the screens (exactly copied from the self-report questionnaire):
Screen 1: "Are you Hispanic or Latino? (A person of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin, regardless of race)"
Screen 2: "What category best describes your race?"
I will add language into the interviewer manual to assist interviewers with addressing potential confusion (biracial individuals, individuals who identify their race as Hispanic, etc.).
