Review grammatical concepts, especially pronouns #396

Open tresoldi opened 6 years ago

tresoldi commented 6 years ago

There are grammatical concepts, especially pronouns, missing; these are found in some concepts lists as linguists collect them both for typological research and for investigation of language evolution (assumed to be more stable and less subject to borrowing). One of the case is that of Papuan languages, as in Z'graggen's list; see https://github.com/clld/concepticon-data/pull/395 .

The concepts should be expanded to include properties such as different numbers (singular/dual/plural), inclusiveness (inclusive/exclusive), cases, etc. whenever possible (please note that many entries are already there). Other grammatical concepts, such as those related to negation and possession, could be included in this review.

Is this still planned for https://github.com/clld/concepticon-data/milestone/4 ?

It depends on how deep we want changes for the 1.3 milestone, and how much time we have. I still think it is worth doing this review, possibly along with others, perhaps also by citing standard reference biblio on the matter, but it might be necessary to push if forward in the roadmap (in particular, is the 1.3 milestone a requirement/dependency for the data science paper?).

It is worth mentioning that this would also imply some auxiliary tool (even if a script we share ourselves) to check all the conceptlists already included (and possibly unmapped concepts in lexibank datasets), as it would be hard to keep track by heart of all the necessary changes and their implications.
