Writing XDMF files in parallel takes too long #208

Solution to issue cannot be found in the documentation.

Issue

Hello everyone, I have some issues when writing XDMF files. I have the following MWE

from fenics import *
import time

mesh = UnitSquareMesh(8, 8)
V = FunctionSpace(mesh, "CG", 1)

u = Function(V)

s_time = time.time()
with XDMFFile(mesh.mpi_comm(), "u.xdmf") as file:
    file.write_checkpoint(u, "u", 0, append=False)
e_time = time.time()
print(f"Elapsed time: {e_time - s_time} s", flush=True)

When I run this command in serial, writing the mesh takes something like 0.01 sec, give or take. However, when I run the problem in parallel using mpirun -n 2 python mwe.py, I get writing times of around 7 seconds.

I have tested this behavior with 4 current builds and first thought it was an HDF5 issue. However, the problem seems to be related to OpenMPI, as when I use MPICH the problem does not occur. I will share the output of conda list for all four environments below, so that you can see which builds work and which don't. For the original post, I am attaching the one with a problematic OpenMPI build.

After further inquiring this issue I could not reproduce it on several new VMs. This seems to be an issue with our servers and seeing as using OpenMPI had several issues there, I'll just close the comment. If someone else knows about this issue and perhaps ways to resolve it, please contact me ;)
