Forward-ports #229 to rc-branch, and also addresses #227

Thanks for the extremely quick approval! Given the fact that the CI for https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/commit/2d69280660800324f774d400dcf13282de16671f was green already, I'm going to put this in right away. :)
