Rename to osmesalib? #2

Open Korijn opened 7 years ago

Is it commonly understood that mesalib refers to OSMesa? It surprised me for sure, and seeing as there are so many flavours of mesa, I thought it might be wise to rename the package to osmesalib.

@Korijn sorry I just saw this. It's a good idea, how does one change a package name in conda-forge though? Staged-recipes?

@jakirkham might know?

5 years later....

I can't speak to people's thoughts in the past but

renaming a package involves a significant amount of churn. Most importantly, if done poorly, it will break people's ability to update environments, and then get them stuck in some weird combination of versions that maintainers usually cannot recreate.

See https://github.com/conda-forge/conda-forge.github.io/issues/1894

However, it was done in the past when a large dependency could be dropped:

I think the rename could happen, if we found a similar advantage.

@hmaarrfk I'm not involved with this at all any longer. I see you're doing a lot of work on it, so I'll leave it up to you.
