For older versions, an exception is raised, see https://github.com/spatialaudio/nbsphinx/issues/449.

This might have been a spurious report, see https://github.com/spatialaudio/nbsphinx/issues/449#issuecomment-621784066.

But I don't know. Is the Sphinx version range limited to >= 1.8 in the package?
