Folks, this package is unmaintained and we recommend tectonic or miktex instead, both available on conda-forge.

If that's the case, it would be useful to update the README and the description as seen on https://anaconda.org/conda-forge/texlive-core to clearly indicate that fact.

AFAICT this is maintained. There are migration PRs getting merged:

Also this was bumped to the 2023 release: https://github.com/conda-forge/texlive-core-feedstock/pull/77

It is also used in several places

That said, think the expectations of this package might be out-of-step with how it is used in practice. Am guessing folks are looking for a fully functional TeX Live distribution based on this package (or the ability to get one started from here). This package is very far from that

Despite the occasional discussion about adding tlmgr, this hasn't really gone anywhere. This in part because this has proved to be a hard problem. This issue ( https://github.com/conda-forge/texlive-core-feedstock/issues/3 ) has been open basically since this package was added and recent attempts haven't been sufficient ( https://github.com/conda-forge/texlive-core-feedstock/pull/78#issuecomment-1504346375 ). This has largely been due to a lack of build options that would support what we would want (hence attempts to graft on other pieces unsuccessfully)

Instead this package has provided the most minimal starting point of a TeX Live distribution and nothing more

Completely understand this is disappointing, but don't really have anything better to offer 😞

So where to go from here...

  • We could document the status quo (maybe in a README in the recipe and/or the package description)
  • We can suggest alternatives that are more feature complete like Tectonic

Let's do this for now: document the status quo and suggest alternatives for those looking for something else. If tlmgr gets added at some point, we'll modify the description accordingly.

How does that sound?

BTW, my comment in #14 may be influenced some burnout in maintaining this package. I just couldn't handle the constant barrage of complains. So, by unmaintained I meant: I won't add new features/options to it. Just the bare minimum maintenance stuff, like merging migration PRs.

Also, help to add tlmgr is very welcomed!

Completely understandable. Hoping a clear statement about what this package does and does not do will help calibrate expectations (and associated discussions). Or if nothing else, we will have a document to point to when we get questions like these
