Update and simplify the code of ves and vets #2

  1. Make it more readable, similar to adam() from smooth, e.g. proper inputs and outputs.
  2. Rename some functions, so that they are easier to read.

(2) is done. (1) is done only partially. In the end, this is a combination of es() and adam() in style of code writing.
