I wrote almost all of this just under a year ago, but then shelved the project that I wanted to use grass for. Today I was taking a look at it again and decided to resume it, and so started by rebasing this and finishing it off.

CI seems to be failing, but for spurious reasons. I really like this change -- thanks!
