Can you merge this branch into master? I'm use your code in production at least 1 month (with two directories) - I'm satisfied

@asmyasnikov I have been working toward bigger changes that better enable this functionality, plus get us closer to supporting reload as per #78 in the branch generate_ids.

Once those are ready, that work will supersede this PR.

Sorry for the delay; I've needed to focus on other projects lately.
