Small typos and such in README #24

We didn't have a chance to do a final pass on someone doing a fresh setup from the README before Eric's fellowship ended so this should be done. I noticed a typo on a folder name just now so thought I'd make an issue and start fixing these bits and pieces as I come across them.

Merged a branch that has some work on this. There's more to be done here but wanted to incorporate the updates made so far so will do next bunch on a new issue/branch.
