The details of the implementation have significantly changed after the switch to a systemd-based solution, as have the performance characteristics. We also have a new performance graph, created by the gnuplot.sh script.

@dougsland the first proper version of this was kindly authored by you, feel free to review this. I'll be fixing up the shellcheck stuff in the meantime.
