Open source / free software nature not prominently advertised #444

Open Chealer opened 3 years ago

Chealer commented 3 years ago

According to What is Podman?, Podman is open source, unlike its competitor Docker. If this is exact, this should be prominent and indicated somehow on Podman's homepage, presumably in its second paragraph (Podman description). This could be as simple as describing Podman as "open source", "free software", "FLOSS" or "FOSS", or mentioning its license.

Please open a PR, how you would like the description to show.

Chealer commented 3 years ago

@rhatdan can you clarify what you mean by "PR"?

TomSweeneyRedHat commented 3 years ago

@Chealer in @rhatdan speak, PR == Pull Request

Chealer commented 3 years ago

Thanks @TomSweeneyRedHat

If we are asked to "open" a merge request, we do not have any branch (let alone any change) solving this.

TomSweeneyRedHat commented 2 years ago

@mairin here's one for your design work. I tried to assign it to you, but GitHub wouldn't hear of it.

mairin commented 2 years ago

@TomSweeneyRedHat Ah I think the trick is if I comment it'll let you assign to me. Let's see if it works!

TomSweeneyRedHat commented 2 years ago

Looks to be the case @mairin , it's all yours now and thanks!

@Chealer I have some WIP mockups for a new podman.io front page and features pages, and I would love your feedback on whether or not you feel they address highlighting Podman's open source nature.

Here is the first page... I added by the latest stable version number under the main call-to-action buttons in the hero banner that the license is Apache 2.0: Screenshot from 2021-12-06 14-22-06

On the features page, I have the first sentence of the main description as "Podman is an open source container, pod, and container image management engine." Screenshot from 2021-12-06 14-22-14

Let me know what you think, if these work or if you have better ideas.

Chealer commented 2 years ago

Thank you very much @mairin I will not comment on the Features page proposal, but the homepage revamp looks quite promising. Considering that some may not know about the Apache license (which is not quite as known as - say - the GPL), I would argue that the proposed homepage mention is fairly subtle. But even adding a subtle advertisement on the homepage surely largely increases prominence, and I for one would consider this issue solved if that proposal is implemented.
