The property $this->news_metaFields is a copy&paste relict...

It was already present in your initial commit (https://github.com/contao-community-alliance/events-contao-bindings/commit/7784a7deea2528a961892144b4ea586f65b160d4#diff-103a6530a463afcfc53d3538e69acf1bR201). I have no idea what it is or should be like, so feel free to implement it.
