Reducing the scope of the translated websites #134

Closed leofeyer closed 3 years ago

leofeyer commented 4 years ago

Having contao.org in Spanish and French is great, however, there are some issues that bother me:

News

Unfortunately, the news are greatly out of sync. On both the Spanish and the French site, Contao 4.8 is the most recent Contao version:

Partners

Even though partners can add a Spanish and French description, almost none of them did. Therefore, the descriptions on the Spanish and French websites remain empty:

Case studies

Neither the Spanish nor the French website has any case studies:

We can work around this by always showing all case studies and omitting the description if there is none, just like we already do with the partner entries. But that cannot be considered a good solution.

Conclusion

Maybe we should reduce the scope of the translated pages by removing the dynamic areas such as news, events, case studies and partners and referring visitors to the English version instead? Something like "This content is not available in your language. Check out the English or German website instead".

What do you think?

alex1971 commented 4 years ago

You're right Leo.

I had put more focus on translating the core and since I didn't get the news to translate directly, I've just forgotten about it. I would like to continue translating the news into Spanish, I'll plan for that.

Regarding the case studies, there are unfortunately no Spanish projects and I think that a referral to English would be better at this point.

I didn't even know the possibility for the partner's description area. I could add that.

aschempp commented 4 years ago

It is common to show english content if a translated is not available. Maybe we can try that? Which applies to partners etc, and maybe we just copy english news into the languages and "wait" for them to be translated?

alex1971 commented 4 years ago

That would be good except for the news. In my opinion, the "most important" news should appear in Spanish or French.

leofeyer commented 4 years ago

I think the question is whether we need translated news at all? Of course we can invest more manpower to keep the news in sync, but is it really worth the effort?

Is having Spanish news equally important than having the Contao back end translated into Spanish? Is it equally important than having a Spanish documentation? I do not think so.

leofeyer commented 4 years ago

We only have a certain amount of manpower and we should focus on where it is really needed.

alex1971 commented 4 years ago

The core is the most important in my opinion. But we can translate (only) the announcements of the versions and other (very important) News. The documentation in English is sufficient for spanish users.

@netzarbeiter WDYT?

alex1971 commented 4 years ago

Another question, Who do I contact if, for example, want to translate the following message? https://contao.org/en/news/contao-4_10_0.html So it would be good if I had the message in English in the Spanish archive, as before, so that I don't have to search for general entries such as screenshots, etc.

an @leofeyer oder @netzarbeiter ?

netzarbeiter commented 4 years ago

I would prefer Andy's suggestion.

Since we now have Matomo on contao.org, we will soon see how many people use the translated websites. Then we can decide based on this data how to proceed.

leofeyer commented 3 years ago

These are the numbers of October 2020:

About 82,5% of all visitors were using the German website, 16,7% were using the English website, 0,5% were using the French website and 0,2% were using the Spanish website.

However, the ER2 still makes up a large part of the traffic, therefore we have to subtract that and compare the numbers again: About 87,1% of all visitors were using the German website, 11,2% were using the English website, 1,0% were using the French website and 0,5% were using the Spanish website.

I think we can say that the Spanish and French websites have almost no relevance. We should therefore not spend any more time or manpower on them IMHO.

netzarbeiter commented 3 years ago

A thousand thanks for all the time you have invested in the translation, @alex1971 and Franck.

xchs commented 3 years ago

0,005% were using the French website and 0,002% were using the Spanish website

The numbers are not correct. Actually, there are ~0,54 % French and ~0,23 % Spanish visitors. 🙈 😄

alex1971 commented 3 years ago

Ok Leo @netzarbeiter thx!

You are right. I have adjusted my post accordingly.

I disagree. Contao is a community project, not everything is about market relevance. Japanese and Russian are the most actively maintained translations of the Contao Manager, because there (apparently) are highly committed users in that community. I don't care if 10 or 10'000 users speak Japanese or Russian, but I sure do appreciate their contribution. Asking people not to "contribute" because their market is "not relevant" is very rude and certainly not the right signal in my opinion.

leofeyer commented 3 years ago

Sure, if @alex1971 and Franck want to continue translating the news etc. even though the target audience is very small, that is fine with me. 👍🏻

I was not going to remove the translated websites anyway. I only wanted to reduce their scope to save Alex and Franck some time and work. We might as well refer our Spanish and French users to the English news, case studies and partner entries instead of showing them an incomplete news archive or a lot of "this content is not available in your language" messages.

But in the end, it is @alex1971 and Franck's decision of course. Only if they decide to proceed this way, I wish that the important news were translated near-time, so Contao 4.8 is not advertised as the latest version on the Spanish and French website. 🤷🏻‍♂️

alex1971 commented 3 years ago

I am happy to translate the important news. But of course I would be happy if we were notified when news came out to be translated. In the past we always received a short notification and this was usually translated as soon as possible. Some time ago it was decided not to send any more notifications, from that moment on things stopped going smoothly. It would therefore be of a great help to briefly give me a hint as before, then I guarantee that the archive in Spanish is up to date. For the case studies and partners you can also include an English selection, in my opinion the partners should deliver the translated text anyway, then this would not be a problem either.

aschempp commented 3 years ago

I guess communication is the key again 😆 I think actively pinging people is hard and randomly fails, we're never good at that. @alex1971 a very simple solution might be to setup a IFTTT to receive an email when something is posted at https://twitter.com/contaonews_de 😎
