term: Structured data #44

Transferring from old register. I think Michael Andrews may have proposed this term originally.

How is this different from 'structured content', which is an LoCS term? We either need one or the other if they are synonymous, not both. In which case, which is the primary term? Seems to me that would be 'structured content'.

The only content in the old Google draft file was this:

Semantic metadata describing content entities and used to support search.

In response to that...

  1. Is 'structured data' and "semantic metadata" synonymous, then? If so, which is the more prevailing term?
  2. What does "content entities" mean? HTML blocks in the DOM? What would be a good code example?
  3. How does structured data support search? ;)

The point of these questions is (if we're going to take this term seriously), to develop a meatier definition than just 10 words, which are rather technically abstract.
