Research best practices for SEO #1

We need to identify the best practices for SEO and then come up with the requirements that can be incorporated in our cms.

Following are some of the requirements for SEO:

  1. Site should be able to have META (keywords and description) tag on per page basis.
  2. Site should have title on per page basis. (should not be more than 65.)
  3. Site pages should have friendly urls.
  4. Alt text on images.

Sitewide SEO Features

  1. Robots.txt Control Robots.txt is a file that allows you to control what areas of the site search engines are allowed to look at. If you have staging areas of your site, or places that shouldn't be indexed by search engines, that needs to be controlled in the robots.txt file.
  2. 301 Redirects
  3. Analytics
  4. LANDING PAGES
  5. XML sitemaps

Header Tags

Page & Site Navigation – That means that information and ‘action-taking’ activities must be easy to figure out and can be quickly retrieved.

HTML Sitemap – An HTML sitemap is a text version of your sitemap that is a bulleted outline of your sites navigation, with anchor text linking to each page.

Anchor Text – Anchor text is a link in a website, but the clickable text,For example, proper anchor text might be ‘dog grooming’, not ‘click here’.

An Ideally Optimized Web page:

Link back to its category page Link back to its subcategory page (If applicable) Link back to its homepage (This is normally accomplished with an image link showing the website logo on the top left of a page.)
