It is suspicious that there is no source code, and also no clear revenue stream. It's not commercial software, but nor is it FOSS.

It should be donationware, judging by the website; also it's clear that this could very well be a side project for which they didn't really pay fees, and hooking into Explorer is already seen as malicious. Sure, there's a problem with custom certificate using, as the only "online" functionality should be checking for updates, but IDK why they're just not using the OS' CA system for that.

For what it's worth, it'd be super bad if they actually stole user information; we could've just payed them for licenses.

Very sorry for the confusion. We're working hard to fix the signing issue, In the next step we plan to sell activation codes but don't worry, it won't be too expensive.

We use libcurl and openssl for https requests, such as downloading updates.
