My thoughts on what "foist v2" will be. Maybe called {fastpng}.

• Fork fast PNG from {foist} to new package ({fastpng}?)
  • drop Rcpp dependency
  • drop GIF and NETPBM support
  • add fast uncompressed in-memory PNG write to raw vectors
• Maybe incorporate {spng} (https://github.com/coolbutuseless/spng)
  • AT default compression levels this lib doesn't offer any advantage over png::writePNG()
  • But fiddling with compression options gets a 2x or 3x speedup. Worth investigating. See https://libspng.org/docs/encode/#performance

For childish reasons I quite like fng as a package name. Kind of an abbreviation of "fast (p)ng" crossed with "how fast is it? F'ng fast". And gives scope for starting arguments about how it's pronounced, carrying on the "gif" vs "gif" debate. Or perhaps foister, cos, well, it'll be even more foist than foist was.

Plan sounds fine to me!

This is where I'll continue developing fast PNG read/write. The C library libspng allows for twiddling with compression levels and turns out quite fast.
