I found the these packages somewhat useful:

Is there any overlap between mahotas and scikits.image?

Yes, there is overlap. Some of the functionality supported is the same.

Overlap is not 100%, though. Some of the functionality that mahotas supports is 
not supported by skimage (and vice-versa, of course, skimage has stuff that 
mahotas does not). mahotas tends to be faster in benchmarks.

By the way, the license on mahotas is now MIT (it was GPL before). If it 
matters.

pymorph is "dormant" ans is slowly being merged into mahotas.
