If Wizards isn't opposing it, it would be best to do it on Wizards' forums. EDIT: Wizards' shut down their forum on 20151029. Boo!

Speaking of feedback, do you have plans to do this sort of thing for the other books like the DMG?

copperdogma commented 8 years ago

Ahhh.. not really. I did this one because my friends and I all hated using the PHB index and we used it all the time. I have limited time and 1000 other project I want to tackle.

I'd be happy to help anyone else who wants to tackle it, though!

ceryliae commented 8 years ago

Hmm, I don't know, I could make one for the DMG, but I suppose I'll have to wait and see how everyone likes the PHB index on the DM screen.

copperdogma commented 8 years ago

You're putting it on a DM screen? That's the thing with these kinds of projects -- I have no idea how people are going to use them! That's part of the fun, I guess.

If you DO want to do it let me know and I'll run you through my whole process. It'll probably save you some time.

rjbprime commented 8 years ago

I know it is necro-ing an issue from over a year ago, but is it possible you could run me through the process? I would like to create the DMG one. My next question, how would I send the compiled docx/pdf back to you when its done?

copperdogma commented 8 years ago

Oh yeah no problem. It's not very high-tech;)

I took a PDF of the PHB, then copy & pasted the text of the index. It wasn't very good, so I went by and fixed it up by hand. Then I added all of the missing references (adjusting the existing ones if I added new sub-references) in a text file (which is checked in). Then I copied and pasted that into a Word doc and formatted it to properly fit in the back of a normal Handbook.

So I suggest you follow the same steps (you could even just type out the DMG index by hand -- honesty it may be faster than trying to get an OCR'd PDF and correcting the garbage it spits out) and use a a copy of my Word doc as a starting point.

Is the DMG Improved Index text file current? If so, may I use that and then somehow send it back to you? I'm not really sure how to use github, I pretty much signed up to speak to developers if I'm not sure on how their software / things like this work. Would attaching it to this comment work?

DMG Index Improved.pdf DMG Index Improved.docx

I hope that they work.

copperdogma commented 8 years ago

Ah ha ha. I have a terrible memory. Yes, the DMG one is current.

Yes, you may use that one and get it back to me;)

And yes, attaching it to this thread would work fine.

I know the tools are a beast to learn how to use for a normal person. I would never inflict that on anyone who isn't a programmer;) I welcome any improvements you have to it and I'd be happy to integrate it with what's already there on your behalf.

Were the ones you attached ones you had already edited that have your new changes?

Sorry for the late reply, yes, I have edited those files to have the DMG text that was in your text files.

copperdogma commented 7 years ago

The files you attached on 2-Oct-2016 (DMG Index Improved.pdf and DMG Index Improved.docx) seem identical to the latest versions posted to the site.

Are you sure those are the ones you made changes to? Can you give me an example of something you changed?

rjbprime commented 7 years ago

The Docx and PDF I uploaded on 3rd October is the result of using the PHB Index, ripping out the guts, and replacing it with the DMG Index TXT File, then formatting it. Or is the version you have in the repo one you did? If so, I didn't realise you had made a DMG Index, as when I was searching for one, I didn't see it on your repo. If you made one and I just didn't see it, then I must apologise, as I don't want to cause any issues.

Thank you Copperdogma for coming up with the original idea and thank yourjbprime for providing content for the DMG.

I have prepared a three column version of the DMG for those of us with slightly older eyes. :)

I have attempted to attach the docx to this post.

@rjbprime Well thanks for all of your work! Can you just check to make sure the ones I have up on the site are the same as yours? As far as I can tell they are:

copperdogma commented 7 years ago

@basilforth Thanks so much! I've added it to the site: https://github.com/copperdogma/dnd-phb-5e-index/

I tried to mimic the exact format of the original index, but I completely agree the font is too small and I don't blame you for wanting a new one. This is perfectly keeping with the spirit of why I started this in the first place -- make a better index.
