This appears to be a known issue, with known workarounds.

Question 1: Is this the only thing preventing mphidflash from working under 
10.10, or are there other things that are also needed?

Question 2: Is there a binary-format installer (ideally through ubuntu software 
center) that provides the necessary library (or libraries)?
