[Feature request] Translation to another languages #3358

Open kuba3351 opened 2 years ago

Hello

I would like to request of providing a translation of rpm-ostree tool to another languages. It is used in some Fedora variants like Silverblue or Kinoite as a dnf replacement tool. Dnf is translated to many languages, so I think transalating rpm-ostree will improve user experience on that Fedora variants. I can help with translating to Polish if it will be a place in this repository that I can commit the translation.

I think this would be cool, though ideally rpm-ostree isn't the primary UX for managing FSB but rather GNOME Software, which is already localized. Obviously, there's still a lot of functionality needed to get there (e.g. just read this post this morning related to that). But still, I wouldn't be against adding translations to rpm-ostree, because likely not everything should be mapped to Software and sometimes you have to drop to the CLI.

The mixed language setup we have might make implementing this more complex though.

This is true about Fedora Silverblue but not true about Fedora Kinoite which is an official variant since Fedora 35 and I am using it. It does not have a GNOME Software, and KDE Discover not supports rpm-ostree right now so, rpm-ostree is the primary tool in this case

I have some experience in the distant past with using GNU gettext from C, but nothing more recent. Should we try to follow the translation setup from e.g. https://github.com/rpm-software-management/libdnf/ ? Or perhaps https://github.com/systemd/systemd/tree/main/po ?

I suspect actually, in order to translate rpm-ostree we'd also need to translate ostree.

We probably need someone to spike on researching and evaluating the different choices. I think Fedora has a translation tool which contributors can use to pitch in from a web UI. Not sure how that gets to the upstream projects.
