Icons fuzzy at 200% scaling on 2.8k screen #47

Hi Marcos, I updated to Ubuntu Oracular Oriole 24.10 and installed folder-color perfectly forcing the ppa from Noble 24.04. I was very happy to know that folder-color continues to work on Gnome 47 and in Nautilus (Files) 47.0. Tested and working great. Thank you so much 🙏. There's only one slight issue:

I am now using 200% scaling on a 2.8k screen, and the colored folders look fuzzy compared with the default folders, at the minimum zoom in Nautilus. Is a higher definition of the icons available? Is it possible to improve the definition? Perhaps there are higher definitions icons, but, in my case, it is using lower definition ones? I have also noted that the emblems are slightly faded - but still seem to be quite sharp.

Here's an image so you can see:

Many thanks as always!

I guess I have found another aspect of the same issue. When I check the properties of the file, the colored folder becomes suddenly much bigger than the other default folders.

Ps. I totally understand that you may not plan on supporting Ubuntu 24.10. I'm sure it's difficult to keep up with the changes to Nautilus with each Gnome version!

Hi @vescovaccio Thank for the feedback! I think it could be because of this. Could you confirm please? How to test:

Best regards.

If I zoom to the largest in nautilus, and set the color, then zoom back to the smallest, the icon is sharp. But as soon as I check properties of one colored folder it jumps to the next zoom level higher up.

This may be because - I read somewhere - that they changed the number of zoom levels available from 3 levels in Files 45/46 to 4 levels in Files 47. So, while the lowest level is now available for default folders, it isn't available once you check properties or otherwise act on the folder.

I don't really know... But this is how it leaves my folders:

As seen at lowest zoom:

1) Fuzzy, color set at smallest zoom; 2) & 3) color set at biggest zoom; 4) default folder.

The second zoom level puts them all at the same level (fuzzy and not fuzzy). But if I go back to the smallest zoom, they have different sizes again. Unfortunately, on my 2.8k screen, and 200% scaling, the second level zoom is too big for me, and ideally I stay at the lowest level zoom all the time..

Please, keep the test as I proposed:

If I zoom to the largest in nautilus, and set the color (stop here).

Is in that point the icon blur?

Best regards.

If I zoom to the largest icons, and set a color, the folder is slightly more fuzzy than the default:

If I then decrease the zoom, the fuzziness is less visible but still there.

I'll keep this open, but it's a Nautilus behavior and I can't do anything about that. From the last versions I have to set a specific icon (with a specific resolution), and if you change the size of the icons with the view, they will be blur. Thank you for the feedback!

I understand.

I, in fact, don't ever want to change the icon zoom, just keep it always at the lowest level. The small problem for me is that the colored icon already happens to be fuzzy at that level. And if I ever check the properties, that one folder jumps up a size, leaving all the other default folders the same size. It weird behaviour and doesn't look great. The only way to get the colored folder back to the same size as the other default ones again is to remove the color by setting it back to default, and then applying the color again, and never checking the properties again.

The alternative, for me, is to only ever use the second level zoom, at which the icons are sharper when I set their color, and checking properties doesn't make them jump a size.

In fact, the sweet spot is the second zoom level. Everything works as expected, and the slight fuzziness isn't so visible.

It just seems that the smallest icon size isn't supported at the moment.

It's just a shame for me, because at 200% scaling, with font size reduced to 0.75,, I simply can't see many folders in the window, and there's so much white space around the icons. 100% scaling makes everything too tiny. And, at 150% scaling, Wayland makes the text of XWayland apps fuzzy. So, I'd have to go back to X, rather than sticking with Wayland.

A shame. But I totally understand that Files (aka Nautilus) keeps changing the goal posts! And computer manufacturers keep changing screen resolutions! And Wayland isn't quite ready to deal with everything!

Thank you in any case Marcos 🙏 🙏 🙏
