Opening GUFW causes system freeze, and missing text in GUFW window #71

Open Moto121 opened 2 months ago

Moto121 commented 2 months ago

In Linux Mint 21.3. Opening GUFW causes a full system freeze that requires a forced reboot to recover. Also the text is missing from the "welcome box" in GUFW. This does not happen when Mint is first installed. But after running software manager and allowing updates it will do this 100% of the time. Something in that initial batch of updates is not playing nicely. Unfortunately it is 30+ items so I don't know where to place the blame. Machine is a Dell E6410. There are no problems running Mint 20.3

Hi, thanks for the feedback but I can't reproduce it. Gufw is working in Mint 21.3 in my test.

Moto121 commented 2 months ago

I updated two machines using the same stick. Acer is working fine. Dell crashes 100% of time after running updates. Tried purging and reinstalling. Re-downloading mint and reinstall. No joy. It is definitely caused by one of the updates though. Works perfect until they are applied.

Any other reports of this? Tried to upgrade my son's laptop to mint 21.3 today. It is a Dell e6420. Same behavior!

It works perfectly on an Acer machine install with the same stick. No joy on my Dell. Tried to purge/uninstall. Reinstall Mint with new download. No luck. All is well before I let Mint run updates.

I confirm, same problem on Linux Mint 22. When starting GUFW the system freezes completely.

I partly confirm this issue on my Linux Mint 21.1 Vera: welcome text is completely missing. But operation system is not freezing. My Mint runs in Virtualbox VM 7.0. Issue still remains after completely removing and new installing "gufw" package via Synaptic manager. Screenshot

Moto121 commented 1 week ago

So I hopped over to Linux Lite to see if the issue happens there as well. Which it does. The following is the error log at crash:

T21:14:05.544023-04:00 mike-Latitude-E6410 kernel: nouveau 0000:01:00.0: gr: DATA_ERROR 00000012 [RT_LINEAR_WITH_ZETA]

These two lines repeat maybe 20 times. Complete system freeze. Must force reboot. I'm guessing this is something to do with the nouveau driver. But unfortunately the Nvidia drivers are not an option for this machine. And certainly there are others using GUFW with even older graphics cards than this. Any insight after seeing the errors?

Moto121 commented 5 days ago

This is happening in every distro. After installing the Nvidia 340 driver. The welcome screen shows text, and no crash. So this is definitely due to Nouveau driver. Which is unfortunate. Not sure why this is the only app that crashes due to this driver.
