It's not going to works #152

I think this approach is not going to work. A system doesn't need to actually be correct to have an effect on individuals and the society. Peoples collecting data and tracking users just have to pretend it's working. And if enough peoples believe a system works, this system and narrative will influence how the society works. In this regard Privacy Possum, by creating some counter technical system reinforce the believe that data and user tracking is powerful. I'm not saying it is not, but perhaps not "that" powerful.

Actually, I doubt data tracking is used at is full potential. How many time Google redirects me to Google en German even though I do not speak German? Yet, it doesn't diminish the power of Google.

On top of that, services based on data will always create natural monopoly (there is a high investment cost, and a very low marginal cost --> monopoly). Because enterprise are in monopolistic competition situation, they don't need to be that efficient. Amazon doesn't need to be "that smart" to own the market. In fact, once it own the market, he can actually be less and less efficient.

You can't beat automation by trying to inject fake data. Even a denial of service (DoS) attack will not change the game, Amazon can be a bit more wrong, but so what? You will still buy books there. They will still be the major player in this market.

The answer needs to be politics. Capitalism, as we know, doesn't seem to be a good system for this new "automation/data market". It's reinforce to concentration of wealth and power, and that's the real problem.

Privacy is a concern, but you have to look at the bigger picture.

Your project is interesting, but being interesting is not enough. It need to be radically efficient or it's 100% useless.

I'm guesing you're looking for something like AdNauseum.

gagarine commented 5 years ago

@SW1FT this one is quiet funny and entertaining. But I'm saying that you can not beat such system using technical tools. Because the system is not static, they will adapt. And anyway in front of monopolies, you can't do anythings as a "consumer".

pipboy96 commented 5 years ago

@gagarine Well, you can suggest your own solution if you have one. Generally, when people say "This is not going to work", other people expect them to also explain the different solution the first person has in their mind.

gagarine commented 5 years ago

I do not have a technical solution. I would have share it if I do have one. I do believe it's can be fixed in the law, making it illegal to tracks peoples and break monopoly in smaller company (like standard oil) or have some control by the state (like for railway). So it's political no technical. I pointed out it will not works not to diminishing the project, but to bring some point on the table. Then peoples working on this project can accept or not my argument and decide if they want to spend time on this project. In a lot of project, I would have appreciate if someone told me "it's not going to works because X" so I can spend my time on project with a better chance of success.

pipboy96 commented 5 years ago

@gagarine I believe that technical and political solutions should work together as a whole system. Unfortunately in the current state of world this seems extremely unlikely.

gagarine commented 5 years ago

@pipboy96 In Europe, things are changing quickly right now. I don't know if it's for worst or better, will see. But it's concrete, for example CNIL seem to start testing the new GDPR jurisdiction: https://www.cnil.fr/en/cnils-restricted-committee-imposes-financial-penalty-50-million-euros-against-google-llc
