When I select a contact, the labels list in the left menu is updated ("tools labels admin"), and has checkboxes.
I think it is quite unclear what this menu is for. I think it is to change the labels associated with the contact?
Also, displayed labels are weird. It seems it includes any possible label, and not only contact label (typically I have some calendar names that appear in this list, which are not displayed in the standard default list).
Finally, the first checkbox has no label at all, and I have no idea what it is supposed to be.
