ensure test modules are located without . in @INC #81

Hello!

Hopefully this fixes #79 without actually re-adding '.' to @INC as #80 did.

Many thanks to @dcollinsn, @karenetheridge and @jkeenan for their prior work and comments on the issue. If this looks ok to you, we should merge asap.

I haven't looked at it and likely won't get around to it for a while. Do what you think is best, please.
