It takes almost a minute to full-sync notes on startup for me. Not-so-fast network + lost of notes. It works quickly once the initial sync is completed though.
There's a 'since' argument to the 'index' request in simplenote API. Have you tried using it to reduce loading time?
If it is not possible for some reason another alternative would be to do the initial full-sync in the background. Have you considered that?
