"HTTP request failed" on repo sync

Affected Version: 1.17
Environment: Linux

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1.wget -O repo http://git-repo.googlecode.com/files/repo-1.17
2. chmod a+x repo
3. ./repo init -u git://github.com/CyanogenMod/android.git -b gingerbread

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I'd expect it do start downloading the source.

What I see instead is:
Get https://gerrit.googlesource.com/git-repo
error:  while accessing https://gerrit.googlesource.com/git-repo/info/refs

fatal: HTTP request failed

Please provide any additional information below.

Does it work if you install repo with the instructions from AOSP [1]?
