chore: Refactor all code #85

This is not mergeable because it includes too many orthogonal changes. I made most of these changes without internet and did not separate the changes.

I will open up separate PRs to pull out the changes into manageable chunks

All of the notable changes should now be on the master branch, the leftover diff is from a smoke test and a benchmarking test which are not needed
